The Count of Monte-Cristo (1975)

"A TV adaptation of the classic Alexandre Dumas novel. Edmond Dantes is falsely accused by those jealous of his good fortune, and is sentenced to spend the rest of his life in the notorious island prison, Chateau d'If. While imprisoned, he meets the Abbe Faria, a fellow prisoner whom everyone believes to be mad. The Abbe tells Edmond of a fantastic treasure hidden away on a tiny island, that only he knows the location of. After many years in prison, the old Abbe dies, and Edmond escapes disguised as the dead body. Now free, Edmond must find the treasure the Abbe told him of, so he can use the new-found wealth to exact revenge on those who have wronged him." -imdb.com

Have watched this 10 times. I love the book. The movie is lacking, but I can fill in the blanks, except for the fabricated ending.

The movie was good but it could have been better. I know that much of the book had to be cut to fit the story into a movie but they left out the heart of the story. The whole storyline with de Villford's wife, daughter, father and son were reduced to one scene. Edmund's questioning his actions that led to de Villford's wife murdering their son and committing suicide showed that he was still human. Edmund did get revenge on those that ruined his life but he also helped those he had tried to help him. Most of all, the ending to the movie was wrong. As everyone who read the book knows, Edmund does say good-bye to Mercedes but he does not want to go with her. Instead he sails off to live the rest of his life with the daughter of the Ali Pasha.
